MOON JOCK
V.C.-ENVELOPE GENERATOR
MODEL : EM-201
The envelope is not a parameter. It is a decision — the moment-to-moment biography of every sound you make. It determines whether a note arrives like a whisper or a detonation, whether it blooms or collapses, whether it breathes or simply stops. Everything you feel when you hear a synthesizer — the physicality of it, the aliveness — lives inside those four letters. ADSR. It sounds simple. It is anything but.
The Moon Jock EM-201 is a voltage-controlled envelope generator of uncommon depth and scientific rigor. It does not merely shape amplitude. It governs time itself — dynamically, in real time, across a frequency range spanning the threshold of human audition down to geological slowness — with precision that rewards both the composer and the engineer. This is a circuit designed not to approximate contour, but to define it.
01. CIRCUIT ARCHITECTURE
At its core, the Moon Jock employs a cross-coupled NOR-gate latch driving a matrix of high-speed bilateral analog switches — a discrete state-machine of elegant economy. Gate and Trigger signals enter through independent comparator stages with hysteresis bias networks, producing instantaneous, artifact-free transitions that the latch converts into binary-certain switch commands with no ambiguity and no glitch.
The integrating capacitor charges and discharges along exponential curves through precision logarithmic potentiometers, toward a stabilized 10V reference ceiling buffered against thermal drift. Attack, Decay, and Release are time constants. Sustain is a held energy level — maintained with rock-solid stability by a JFET-input output buffer whose high impedance prevents any parasitic bleed of the sustain voltage during the gate-high interval.
02. INDEPENDENT VOLTAGE CONTROL
Every stage carries its own dedicated CV input. Four Stage Modulator Input jacks feed independent transistor networks whose exponential transfer characteristic converts control voltage into proportional changes in charging current — a transfer function that mirrors the logarithmic curves of human auditory perception. Equal voltage increments produce perceptually equal time changes.
Route velocity to attack for dynamically responsive transients. Apply random voltage to decay for organic instability in percussive tails. Track pitch to compress release time — reproducing the natural acoustic behavior of virtually every stringed and percussive instrument. Or ignore physics entirely.
measured in tens of seconds for slow cinematic evolution and long-form ambient architecture.
The A.D. Cycle selector defines the envelope's relationship to its own completion. Normal mode executes standard gated ADSR operation. Auto-Repeat routes the End-Of-Cycle pulse back to the trigger line, converting the module into a free-running function generator — rate, waveshape, and amplitude all under real-time voltage control. Gated-Repeat is the most nuanced mode: the circuit self-oscillates only while the Gate input is held high, then exits cleanly through the Release phase the moment the gate drops, producing precisely gated burst patterns that obey incoming rhythmic structure with complete fidelity.
The result is not three modes but one architecture — the same exponential curves, the same binary-certain switching logic — measured in three radically different units of time. A percussion hit and a slow cinematic sweep are, to the Moon Jock, the same question asked at different speeds.
04. OUTPUT BRANCHES
A three-position Range toggle selects between discrete integrating capacitance values, shifting the fundamental time scale across three orders of magnitude. In Range I, Attack and Decay become voltage-controlled rise and fall slopes operating in the audio-frequency domain — the module becomes a precision waveform generator producing asymmetrical shapes from sawtooth to triangle and all forms between. Range II positions the system as a wide-range, voltage-controlled LFO. Range III enables envelope durations measured in tens of seconds for slow cinematic evolution and long-form ambient architecture.
